Yong Sool Choi

Yong-Sool Choi was one of the most influential people in the development of modern Korean martial arts. When he was about 8 years old he was taken to Japan and later abandoned due to which he had to wander the streets as a beggar and regularly get assaulted by other children. Later a Japanese man adopted and sent his to school for education.

Again, there was a problem in school, due lack of Japanese knowledge he could not understand studies and end up fighting with other children. This was the time when he was asked if he would like to get a formal education in fighting. And he chose fighting as his career. For nearly 30 years he trained with Sokaku Takeda.

Over the next few years, Choi began to establish himself as an outstanding, well-respected martial arts instructor. He called his art Yoo Sool (Korean pronunciation of Ju-Jitsu). He mainly taught what he had learned from Takeda Sensei; slowly adding other techniques, including some kicks and weapon techniques.

After the end of the Korean War, he opened his own private school and began to teach a few other students. This was in 1953. Some of the students during this period had already founded, or had gone on to find their own martial art styles. He is considered to be the founder of Hapkido.

Techies in Fight Club

As per Michael Messner, sociology and gender studies professor at University of Southern California, men involved in fight clubs often carry bottled-up violent impulses learned in childhood from video games, cartoons and movies.

As per the news from USA TODAY, every two weeks some techies from the Silicon Valley turn into vicious street brawlers in a real-life, underground fight club. They are the ones who sport love handles and Ivy League degrees

Kicking, punching and swinging every household object imaginable - from frying pans and tennis rackets to pillowcases stuffed with soda cans - they beat each other mercilessly in a garage in this bedroom community south of San Francisco.

Then, bloodied and bruised, in the morning they back on their work.

After 1999 film Fight Club, starring Brad Pitt and Ed Norton, a number underground bare-knuckle brawling clubs have sprung up across the country. This is for the desk jockeys and disgruntled youths to vent their frustrations and prove themselves.

As per the news, in recent months, police in New Jersey and Pennsylvania have broken up fight clubs involving teens and preteens who posted videos of their bloody battles online.

USA TODAY reports that in Texas, a high school student who didn’t want to participate was beaten so badly that he suffered a brain hemorrhage and broken vertebrae. Six teenagers were arrested after DVDs of the fight appeared for sale online.

Tae Yun Kim

The story of Chairman and CEO, Dr. Tae Yun Kim is indeed inspiring for the newbies as well as the expert practitioners of martial arts. For your information she is a woman and was born in a culture that has had deep prejudices against women for thousands of years. Dr. Kim faced all the situations bravely and breaking the traditional barriers she has achieved unbelievable success in her life.

In her childhood she was abused by her family and abandoned during the Korean War. She broke five thousand years of tradition to become the first female to ever study the martial art of Tae Kwon Do. She continued working hard with the technique and went onto attain the rank of Grandmaster, the highest level in the martial arts.

Her successes made Dr. Kim the head coach for the first US Women’s division in 1974 at the Pre-World Games in Seoul, Korea where they won gold, silver and bronze medals. In fact this was the first Tae Kwon Do US woman’s team at the competitive level. Thereafter the women’s team even reached Olympics.

Using martial arts techniques in focusing, directing energy and meditation, Dr. Kim also coached the US Windsurfing team and the Japanese, Norwegian and New Zealand ski teams and demonstrated to each team the power of believing in themselves.

She has even written some popular books on marital arts. Just remember her trademark words, “He Can Do, She Can Do, Why Not Me,” and you will never loose inspiration in life.

Tae Kwon Do

If you are planning to join the martial arts classes you should find out the style that would be most suitable to you. Along with it you should also see that the instructor teaching at the club are experts in the field.

Tae Kwon Do is one of the best known and most popular of the Korean martial arts. The special features of this style are the kicking techniques. The practitioners who are highly skilled in this style possess assortment of jumping and spinning techniques and will think nothing of kicking above their own head height. The life is like magic if you’re naturally flexible and have long legs.

Now let me tell you something about the history of this style. In the 20th century Japanese had occupied Korea and had altogether banned the Korean martial arts there. However, people were allowed to practice Karate and Kempo as they are Japanese arts. So, you will notice that Tae Kwon Do has strong influences of these two styles.

When Tae Kwon Do first came to America, people here thought it was Korean Karate. The person known to be behind the creation of this style is Grand Master General Choi Hong Hi. Tae Kwon Do also gives a national identity to Korea. Within less than 50 years the game has become an international sport and finds its place in Olympics.

Street Fighting

There are various forms and causes of the street fighting. Street fighting is a term used to denote spontaneous, hand-to-hand fighting in public places. This violence is usually intended to result in injury and submission but not death. But in certain cases the deaths do occur. It often results from a dispute and can stem from group association, harassment, or bullying. Violent incidents involving firearms or explosives are not usually called street fights.

Apart from various situations, the major cause of the street fighting are the people involved in it. They are the thoughtless rowdies whose job is to create disruptions in the society by causing street fighting.

Other forms of violence that are not usually called street fighting are domestic violence, riots, civil unrest, police brutality, and terrorism.

Many times the term “street fighting” is used to describe military combat between conflicting armies within a city as part of a war, rebellion or revolution. This form of combat is more accurately termed urban warfare.

Street fights fall into two major categories: individual street fights, between individuals or small groups of people, and factional street fights, between two or more large groups of people.

The individuals may fight due to personal animosity or intolerance or hate towards other communities, caste or religion. Factional fighting is common amongst the supporters of various political parties and sports teams. Sometimes these fights take a highly violent shape causing large-scale casualties and destruction of property.

Sports Riots

Street fighting is caused due to various reasons and in different scenarios. As such the rowdy people do not require any reason to start the fight. They are always armed with weapons and a tongue to get going. A minor trigger for them is good enough. So you should always be careful when dealing with such persons.

Apart from the street fighting that occurs among the groups of various political parties, the other most prominent street fighting is among the groups of sport fans. These fellows will start rioting right in the stadium on the stands or wait until they come on streets. This hooliganism may be an expression of loyalty, approval, anger, or celebration.

Football (soccer) fans are infamous for drunken brawls in the stadiums. One most disastrous fight amongst the football fans has been the Heysel Stadium riots, in which 39 football fans were crushed to death in a battle between Liverpool F.C. and Juventus fans.

Another sports that are infamous for such disruptions are Ice hockey, whose fans have been known to riot in the streets. This reminds me of the Richard Riot in Montreal, causing $500,000 of property damage in 1955. It all started when Maurice Richard was suspended for deliberately injuring another player.

The sports psychologists are of the view that sports arise due to cultural attitudes that support other types of violence in sports.

Sambo

It is commonly referred as Sombo and in Russian it is written as Cambo. Whatever the name and its pronunciation, Sambo is a unique style of martial arts that has caused arguments amongst its UK and US practitioners concerning its spelling. The problem is that the word Sambo is an offensive word in these counties. While US-UK practitioners want the name to be spelled as Sombo, the Russian instructors continue using the word Cambo or Sambo.

The three prominent personalities who created Sambo (sorry for using the offensive word) are: Vasily Oschchepkov, Victor Spriridonov and Anatoly Kharlampiev. It all began in 1920s when USSR was newly formed. They began studying the fighting systems of the fifteen republics of USSR. Some of them were very old, dating to 10th century and then there were European and Oriental fighting systems

They studied all the techniques deeply, took a lot of trials and experiments, refined the various techniques and came out with a self-defending system, which they called Sambo. The name got official recognition in 1938.

The result was predominantly a grappling based style with an emphasis on real-life self-defense scenarios and practical ways to neutralize a threat. Later Sambo was divided into other categories. Sport Sambo is an international submission-wrestling sport, and Combat Sambo is the martial art version used by “Spetsnaz” the Russian elite forces.

Ralph Castro

Great Grandmaster Ralph Castro is the martial legend in a true sense. He hails from Honolulu, Hawaii, and received training from another legend late Great Grandmaster William K. S. Chow who brought him up into the black belt ranks. His field is Shaolin Kenpo

Around early 1960s, he moved San Francisco and settled there. Here is also started teaching and spreading Shaolin Kenpo Karate, thus producing many top blackbelts who became masters in their own right.

Thereafter he also involved himself in promoting number of sports events and even demonstrations.

In 1982, he was entered in the Inside Kung Fu Yearbook. In 1985 his story was told in Official Karate and he was pictured on the cover. He was featured on the cover of Karate Kung Fu in 1987. Black Belt Magazine placed Ralph Castro on its June cover in 1988 and entered him into its Black Belt Hall of Fame that same year. In 1989 Great Grandmaster Castro was entered in Black Belt Magazine’s yearbook.

He maintained active membership in the International Kenpo Karate Association from 1958 to 1982. In 1981 Ralph Castro laid the foundation of the International Shaolin Kenpo Association of which he is the current President.

I personally think that his biggest contribution to martial arts has been his daughter June Castro. He has trained her thoroughly and she has grasped the technique with dedication and hard work. Not only this, she has made major contributions in teaching spreading martial arts. She is considered to be amongst one of the best martial arts instructors.

Political Confrontation Leading to Street Fight

Political confrontations are one of the major causes of the street fighting. A political street fight is a physical confrontation between followers of conflicting political organizations or ideas, which takes place in public. They are usually unorganized or semi-organized and are either completely spontaneous or result from conflict between rival demonstrations and counter-demonstrations.

You know, there were several such streets fights in the 1930s between the supporters of fascists and anti-fascists. One such example is The Battle of Cable Street that occurred in the East End of London in 1936 when Oswald Mosley’s British Union of Fascists attempted to march through a Jewish district of London and was stopped by large crowds of Jews and leftists.

One similar fight occurred when in 1933, called the Christie Pit Riot in 1933, it broke out during a baseball game in a public park when an anti-Semitic youth group unfurled a swastika banner at a game between a Jewish team and a Christian team. In fact prior to Hitler’s power in Germany, street fights between Nazis and Communists were quite common.

Even in modern times street fighting has resulted from major confrontations between thousands of police and protesters, particularly at anti-globalization protests such as in Seattle in 1999 or Genoa and Quebec City in 2001. These may involve police use of tear gas, pepper spray and even rubber bullets, and protesters who throw rocks, vandalise automobiles and property, loot, commit arson, set up and tear down barricades. Physical violence on all sides is common.

Labor Confrontation

There are various causes of the street fighting, in fact there are so may causes that it difficult to numerate them. Drunkenness, hate among the people, jealousy, intolerance and tendency to dominate are some the major causes of the street fighting. Street fighting occurs at the flash of a moment and many times the cause of it avoidable.

In the big companies many times workers make some demands, which are not acceptable to the management. This leads to the strike and stoppage of work. Such situations are overwhelmed with the atmosphere of fighting. Even a small trigger can lead to sever street fighting.

Sometimes the management tries to break the strike by bringing in strikebreakers across picket lines, this may result into street fighting. In certain cases the management hires private security forces to harass and physically intimidate the protests. This again converts the work related disputes to the street fighting.

During general strike on a large scale basis the atmosphere is highly volatile and everybody is just ready to start fighting. One such example is the street fighting that was by product of the 1934 Minneapolis General Strike which saw confrontations between “workers defense brigades” set up by the Teamsters union and representatives of business owners as well as the police.

Kickboxing

Kickboxing is one of the famous martial arts sport. When it comes to martial arts, most people associate its origin to Thailand, Japan, Korea or else where in the Far East and kickboxing is not an exception. However, as far as kickboxing is concerned the real origins of the sport are revealed by the real name by which is known, full contact karate.

You know, in the mid seventies many American tournament karate practitioners became frustrated with the limitations of the old competitive scoring system. What they were looking for was a system that would permit the application of the kicks and punches on the way to knockout. This thinking lead to the birth of full contact karat.

This sport later came to be known as kickboxing. Since it had close association with karate, in the earlier days it was played on open matted areas, just like karate. Later events were staged in regular size boxing rings. Having produced the expert kickboxers, Americans wanted to teat their mettle and sent teams of kickboxers to Japan under the banner of the WKA (World Kickboxing Association). This is how kickboxing became an international sport. So, here is the martial arts technique that is truly born in America and taught in American style.

Jiu-jitsu

Are you thinking of joining martial arts classes in Jiu-jitsu style? You must surely be then interested knowing something about the technique and its history. This is a fighting art of the Japanese Samurai without any weapons. With your empty hands you have to defend yourself against the enemy and also attack him. It was of course designed to help the unarmed soldiers to overcome their opponents. It is thought to be the predecessor of all Japanese martial arts.

Jiu-jitsu comprises of grappling, using more techniques such as throws, joint locks, chokes, and holds. To add to it, all forms of Jujitsu incorporate a fair amount of striking techniques using kicks, punches, knees, and elbows.

Samurai (Knights) used it in the earlier days, but soon Ninja (assassins) and then common soldiers and bandits also adopted the technique. After all it is quite natural that all the fighters at some or the other time are without any weapons, at such times Jiu-jitsu proves to be very handy. However, these people were not able to popularize the technique nor were able to create a positive image of it in the society.

The person to study the technique in deep and refine it was Carlos Gracie. In 1914 a Japanese Jiu-Jitsu master named Mitsuyo Maeda, alias “Count of Combat”, went to Brazil and taught it to this bright young lad. Carlos made the technique easy to learn and he opened it for all.

Carlos became a legend in Brazil giving rise to Brazilian or Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.

Jean Claude Van Damme

Have you seen the muscle man Van Damme? Do you know the secret of his muscles? Well, I’m going to disclose the secret. When he was only 12 years old, his father took to train under a martial arts expert, Claude Goetz. This was not an ordinary training nor this was meant merely to pass the time or just learn one of the techniques.

His father had set certain goals and keeping them in mind Jean Claude’s study of the martial arts was highly intense. No ordinary person can think of passing through such a tough program. Anyway, the results were bound to come and soon he went on to become a member of karate Team Belgium, and eventually winning the European Professional Karate Association’s middleweight championship.

Since at a very young age he grasped the technique of martial arts to great depths, he opened the California Gym while still in his teens. He is an ambitious person and always wanted to become a star. In 1982 he got attracted to the glamorous world of Hollywood, of course keeping his knowledge of martial arts intact.

Jean Claude’s superb athleticism, attained through years of karate, ballet and bodybuilding training, has made him an acclaimed, international action star.

Individual Street Fights

There is a lot of difference between the street fighting and the sport fighting. Sport fighting is for winning some trophies or championships and there is spirit of sportsmanship in these fights. Though they can be fierce but they are generally never physical.

The individual street fighting stems from some difference amongst the individuals or hate or any other reason. There are number of reasons for the individual street fight to occur. They occur many times within a flash of moment without any previous warning or anticipation.

While the sport fighting is conducted in the specified format with certain rules, the street fighting is conducted according to an informal code of honor, but in street fighting such a code would be understood rather than explicitly agreed upon. In societies where dueling was common many of the circumstances that would otherwise lead to an individual street fight lead to duels instead.

If you are learning martial arts most likely individual street fighting will be discussed in your class. The base of all martial art techniques is individual attacks and self-defense, because these techniques were discovered at times when persons were not allowed to carry any weapons and still face the enemies. Of course, these days most of the teachers do strongly stress avoidance of fights altogether.

Individual street fighting can arise in many ways, and different cultures are subject to different forms of street fighting. The causes of a street fight are almost always mixed, but certain factors often lead to problems.
